Planning your photography session
For this session, my client had a beautifully clear mood board to share. The inspiration images were all clean and dynamic, with a very minimalist black and white feel – think white backdrops, fresh bright studio lighting, and black outfits.
Through our initial creative consultation prior to the photoshoot, we decided this would form the foundation of our approach, leaving plenty of room to see where the day took. I love offering options during a session, and it turned out that this extra exploration created some incredible photos.
The hair and makeup brief was a bombshell blowout paired with a smokey eye and fresh, glowy skin. Local Adelaide artist Gaetana Marjas absolutely nailed it!
Black chiffon for high-key photographs
While we were exploring this minimalist style, we decided to experiment with transparent black chiffon fabric. I absolutely love adding sheer fabrics to a session; it creates incredibly interesting visual effects. Most importantly, it gives clients something tactile to move and play with, which naturally helps create dynamic, unposed images.
We couldn’t believe how much the chiffon resembled smoke in the final photographs. It gave us so many beautiful options and added a distinct high-fashion, editorial vibe to the gallery.
Low-key studio lighting with a splash of red!
This part of the photoshoot was a chance to just play, explore, and see what else we could create together. As a starting point, my client had brought in some red underwear, so I did what I often do: had a dig through the studio cupboard to see what else might work!
I found a perfectly matched piece of red tulle, and we had so much fun creating sculptural shapes with it. This session perfectly describes how you can come in with a clear creative direction for our collaboration, or you can just bring a bunch of pieces you love and we will figure it out as we go. My client particularly loved this other part of the photoshoot!
