Creating Space: Why Slow Fine Art Photography Matters

Creating Space: Why a Slow Fine art Photography Experience Matters

Thinking about booking a fine art photography session - maybe something like boudoir, art nude, or pregnancy photography? But have you thought about the pace of your photoshoot?!

You’ve probably scrolled through a few websites by now…. But in that time, your phone has buzzed more than once, you remembered you need milk (and added it to your shopping list), and you’ve been interrupted by your dog, cat, child, partner – or all of the above.

Sound familiar?!

I actually wrote a piece a little while ago titled “Slow boudoir, art nude and pregnancy photo sessions”, but this topic feels even more relevant now. The idea of slowing down is becoming increasingly appealing as we’re overwhelmed by constant distractions.

This morning, while walking my dog, I was listening to ABC’s podcast Not Stupid: Slowing down when the world moves too fast”. The hosts talked about an exercise where students were asked to look at a single painting for three hours. It wasn’t until well into that time that the painting’s details and artistic decisions truly began to come to light.

Why consider a slow fine art boudoir photography session?

Traditionally, photo shoots are focused on the end result – the photographs themselves. I’ve been there. Rushing to get the shot and sprinting through back-to-back sessions.

But let’s reframe it: what actually matters?

Yes, I’m a photographer – I love creating stunning images. But what I’ve come to believe is that the process matters even more.

A low key lit, black and white, fine art nude photograph. The edges of the body only are illuminated with high contrast side lighting.

How you feel during your session is more important than ticking off poses that “work.” When you have the space to slow down, settle in, and find what feels good, something deeper begins to emerge.

Because here’s the thing: you won’t remember the perfect lighting or the right angle.
You’ll remember how you felt.
You’ll remember whether you were heard, whether you felt safe, playful, powerful, comfortable in your own skin.

A rushed photo may look technically great – but if all you remember is feeling unsure about your makeup or being directed into awkward poses that didn’t feel like you, then that image doesn’t hold the magic it should. It doesn’t support your sense of self.

How we approach slow fine art photography (aka your personal mix of boudoir, nude and more!)?

Don’t get me wrong – we don’t move like snails! But the pace isn’t dictated by a stopwatch or a checklist. Instead, we follow the energy of the shoot. Sometimes that means moments of quiet reflection. Sometimes it means bursts of laughter or creative flurries where time disappears completely. This is what happens when you only book one shoot per day.

This slow photography experience creates room for:

  • Genuine expression & collaboration
  • Proper breaks (tea is always available!)
  • Trying new ideas without pressure
  • Space to feel, if emotions arise
  • Letting the story unfold naturally

Everyone has a different pace – and that’s completely okay here.

The result? You walk away not just with beautiful photographs, but with a deep connection to the process. Every time you look at your images, you’ll feel what it meant to rediscover, express, and celebrate parts of yourself.
